Aid workers are in a race against time to prevent the spread of cholera among survivors of Cyclone Idai.

The cyclone, which made landfall on 14 March, caused widespread destruction across Mozambique, Malawi and Zimbabwe. It is potentially the Southern Hemisphere's worst ever weather-related disaster.

Recently, cholera cases have been doubling every day, with more than 1,000 survivors now confirmed as having the disease.

The post-cyclone conditions around Beira in Mozambique provide the perfect breeding ground for cholera. Thousands of homeless people are crammed into schools, health centres and churches without adequate water and sanitation.

World Vision is on the ground working with other aid agencies to prevent the cholera epidemic from escalating. We are distributing buckets and jerry cans to enable safe water storage as well as cholera prevention kits which include soap, water purification tablets and hygiene information.

Cyclone Idai FAQs

It is estimated that up to 2.8 million people have been affected by Cyclone Idai across Mozambique, Malawi and Zimbabwe. Over 1,000 people have lost their lives and up to 50,000 homes have been destroyed.

World Vision is on the ground distributing emergency food, clean water and temporary shelter supplies among displaced families. We are also working to prevent the spread of cholera by distributing hygiene supplies and information.

Over the next 12 months, we aim to help 500,000 people by:

  • distributing food and emergency shelter kits
  • working with health workers to prevent disease outbreaks
  • setting up Child Friendly Spaces to provide children with a safe place to play and recover
  • establishing kitchens to provide infants and young children with nutritious meals
  • providing clean water, emergency toilets and bathing facilities
  • organising cash-for-work programs to help families return to work
