Your support can help communities affected by Cyclone Idai build their resilience and be ready for future disasters.

The cyclone, which made landfall on 14 March, caused widespread destruction across Mozambique, Malawi and Zimbabwe. It is potentially the Southern Hemisphere's worst ever weather-related disaster.

From the outset of the emergency, our response team delivered relief efforts reaching affected people with crucial emergency relief services and items.

As the response moved into early recovery interventions, we began concentrating our efforts on medium to long-term resilience activities which focused on reinstating livelihoods, education, child protection, gender rights and strengthening water, sanitation and hygiene.

In the coming months, World Vision aims to continue building a strong civil society in Mozambique, Malawi and Zimbabwe and deliver responses that are effective, sustainable and able to meet the needs of vulnerable people who are affected by the disaster.

Together, we've helped create meaningful impact for survivors of Cyclone Idai during the last year. Read the report.

Cyclone Idai FAQs

It is estimated that up to 2.8 million people have been affected by Cyclone Idai across Mozambique, Malawi and Zimbabwe. Over 1,000 people have lost their lives and up to 50,000 homes have been destroyed.

World Vision is on the ground distributing emergency food, clean water and temporary shelter supplies among displaced families. We are also working with communities to build their resilience and readiness towards future disasters.

Over the next 12 months, we aim to help affected people by:

  • distributing food and emergency shelter kits
  • working with health workers to prevent disease outbreaks
  • setting up Child Friendly Spaces to provide children with a safe place to play and recover
  • establishing kitchens to provide infants and young children with nutritious meals
  • providing clean water, emergency toilets and bathing facilities
  • organising cash-for-work programs to help families return to work
