2016: Thank you!

Comfort and hope for families in crisis

World Vision works around the clock to bring hope and relief to children and families whose lives are threatened by disasters and conflicts, like the Syrian refugee crisis. Thanks to the support of people like you, we’ve helped over 11 million people worldwide – providing food, shelter, water and healthcare.

As of December 2016, World Vision was responding to 15 emergencies across 25 countries, assisting more than six million people. In 2016 we responded to major emergencies including the Syrian refugee crisis – now in its sixth year – as well as the crisis in  Mosul, Iraq, and Hurricane Matthew, which devastated Haiti in September.

Wasantha: growing her business and community

Wasantha is an inspiring business owner and mother-of-two from Sri Lanka. She’s one of many who received a loan through World Vision to grow her small business. Now she’s empowering local women and helping struggling families by providing income-earning opportunities.

“Some seasons there’s no rain and there’s no cultivation. When there’s nothing to do for a living, they look for some way of earning,” Wasantha explained. “Because of the big profit (through her business model) they are able to buy everything they need.”

“Our beginning was with the poor, but now … they are also economically strong,” she said. “I think this business is a blessing to people. Both us and those who take goods from us came up in life through this business.”

Powerful partnership with our government

In 2015-16, the Australian Government trusted us to deliver 75 community-based projects to improve the living standards and wellbeing of children and families, directly benefiting 757,872 people.

The funding World Vision Australia receives through Australia’s aid program gives us the opportunity to conduct large-scale projects, and allows the government to utilise our expertise, infrastructure and access to communities to deliver aid more effectively.

Creating future leaders

In Central Australia, the Kimberley and the Pilbara we have been supporting communities to give their children a good start in life so that they become lifelong learners and are able to enter school, healthy, confident and eager to learn. In Sydney we are helping grow the leadership capabilities of Indigenous youth.

In the Pilbara we are partnering on an innovative adult leadership program. All of our work is helping to create future leaders who are strong and confident across two cultures, building on their talents and strengths and setting them up so that they are able to lead their communities into the future.
