Celebrating 50 years of the 40 Hour Famine

Way back in 1975, the very first 40 Hour Famine was championed by passionate young Australians just like you. In the 50 years since, each generation has taken up the challenge to go without for a weekend – and left their mark on the movement.

The first 40 Hour Famine was held in Victoria in 1975 where more than 16,000 participants raised $570,000. It went on to become a nation-wide event and by 1978 had over 400,000 participants.

1989

Forty students rode the Melbourne metropolitan rail system for 40 hours. The group travelled 739 kilometres and passed through 480 suburban train stations.

1995

The cast of Neighbours joined the 40 Hour Famine. They even promoted it in episode 2,391, where Luke picks up a 40 Hour Famine leaflet.

2009

Big Brother Australia hosted a special event over the 40 Hour Famine weekend where previous cast members went back into the house to raise money and awareness for the 40 Hour Famine.
