Zakhvan Project, Mongolia

See the progress you helped make happen in your sponsored community

When the project started, many parents were struggling to earn a living from basic farming. School facilities were run down and most families had to walk a long way for water.

Thanks to your support, your sponsored child and other children in the Zakhvan community have improved access to education, healthcare and clean water and their families new income opportunities.

Together we've achieved so much

99 percent of children are now completing at least five years of education

In addition, teacher training and literacy programs have helped to improve education quality.

  • 96 percent of children attended pre-school in 2016, up from 45 percent in 2005.
  • Classroom upgrades, new playgrounds and furnished kindergartens gave children safe, clean, healthy places to learn and play.
  • 999 students gained much needed vocational skills through training, lectures, clubs and competitions.

688 health workers have been trained

The project also supported hospitals and health centres with vital medical equipment.

  • 97 percent of children are now exclusively breastfed for the first six months, compared to 46 percent in 2013. This is helping to reduce child malnutrition.
  • Infant mortality dropped by 50 percent in 2016, due to improved access to healthcare and improved awareness amongst parents about the importance check-ups for their children.
  • Two new water kiosks gave over 700 people access to clean drinking water, and new wells and water points gave children in six schools access to clean water. Toilets were built in five schools and over 140 households were supported to build hygienic home toilets.

Farmers quadrupled the number of hectares they can plant with crops

This follows improvements to irrigation and the provision of training and new seeds and tools.

  • An orchard with fruit trees and shrubs has provided 85 people with extra income, and many more families now have nutritious food for their children all year round.
  • A technical centre was set up to train farmers and provide them with tools they could borrow, such as tractors, in order to increase their skills and allow them to plant more crops.
  • 1,806 people found employment following vocational training in sewing, baking, shoemaking, milk production and vegetable canning through community cooperative groups.

"Now we have a steady income source for our family. I think this is a big contribution from World Vision to our community."
