Vuelta Larga Project, Ecuador

See the progress you helped make happen in your sponsored community

When the project started, schools lacked infrastructure and well trained teachers. Many families lacked health knowledge so preventable illnesses were common amongst children.

Thanks to your support, your sponsored child and other children in the Vuelta Larga community have improved access to education and healthcare and their rights are better protected.

Together we've achieved so much

The percentage of children aged 6-12 enrolled in school reached 97 percent in 2015

This is up from 69 percent in 2009.

  • 2,500 primary and secondary students have benefited from new learning and teaching resources and teacher training.
  • 350 students have improved their reading skills following the implementation of a home reading program called the "Travelling Backpack".
  • 2,500 community members including teachers and students have learned about child rights and child protection issues and who to contact regarding cases of child abuse, neglect or exploitation.

98 Community Health Agents have been trained to provide health counselling in their neighbourhoods

This has contributed to an increase in child immunisation and the number of pregnant women attending health checks.

  • 1,200 children and parents have learned – and now practise – hygiene habits including regular hand-washing and teeth-brushing.
  • 5,000 people benefited from a malaria prevention campaign that included the distribution of 1,000 insecticide-treated mosquito nets.
  • 104 parents have learned about the nutritional value of foods available in the local area so they can prepare healthier meals for their children.

150 people developed income earning skills

This training covered activities including beauty treatments, cushion making, and producing cleaning supplies to sell in the local community.

  • Teenagers participated in training workshops where they identified their skills and abilities and identified income generation opportunities. From this, eight small businesses were formed covering activities including bird breeding, selling sweets and dairy products and fast food.

"Since I got involved in the training given by World Vision … I have been able to improve the health of my children and improve relationships with the people that surround me."
