Urin Qosqo Project, Peru

See the progress you helped make happen in your sponsored community

When the project started, education quality was poor and many children dropped out of school early. Lack of access to clean water, toilets and healthcare led to high rates of illness amongst children and many families were struggling to earn enough income.

Thanks to your support, your sponsored child and other children in the Urin Qosco community have improved access to quality education, clean water and healthcare and they are better protected from harm.

Together we've achieved so much

Interactive learning spaces have been created at six schools

Teachers have been trained in literacy education so they can better support and encourage their students' learning.

  • Four early learning centres have been established and 60 teachers have completed early education training.
  • 2,109 adolescents have learned vocational and business skills following implementation of a business studies course in four high schools.
  • 1,326 families have participated in parental skills training covering topics including positive discipline and the importance of parental support for children’s education.

Three new health centres have been built

The project has collaborated with the local government to promote and deliver health services including child health checks and antenatal and postnatal care.

  • Volunteer health promoters have been trained to provide families with health and nutrition information via home visits.
  • The project has collaborated with local authorities to improve access to clean water in nine communities benefiting hundreds of families. This has included the construction of a water reservoir and implementation of a chlorination system for existing water sources.
  • The project has also collaborated with the local government to install sewerage systems enabling families to build hygienic household toilets.

More than 70 women have been trained in business and income earning skills

The training covered skills including pastry cooking, weaving, sewing and jewellery making.

  • 100 families have learned how to practise organic farming techniques to produce nutritious food for their children and generate extra income.
  • Families have received training and material support to start raising guinea pigs for extra income.
  • Women have formed community co-ops where they make and market produce together.
