Tsaeda Emba Project, Ethiopia

See the progress you helped make happen in your sponsored community

When the project started, many families relied on food aid, there weren't enough schools and trained teachers, and children were vulnerable to preventable illnesses.

Thanks to your support, your sponsored child and other children in the Tsaeda Emba community have improved access to clean water, healthcare and education.

Together we've achieved so much

Up to 8,000 people have gained better access to clean water

This follows the construction of 81 wells and one borehole across the project area.

  • 11 school toilet blocks, four public toilets and 490 household toilets were built.
  • Local water committees have been set up to ensure wells and water points stay working. They collect community contributions to cover maintenance costs.

96 percent of children were enrolled in primary school by 2014

This is up from 70 percent in 2003.

  • Three primary schools, 12 classroom blocks and six pre-school classrooms were built.
  • In 2016, over 2,400 primary school students participated in the Literacy Boost program, which has contributed to strong improvements in their reading and comprehension skills.
  • Teachers completed skills training and 62 Parent-Teacher Associations have been set up to monitor and improve education quality.

17,456 children and mothers attended nutrition recovery centres

These centres provide malnourished children with nutritious food and mothers with nutrition education.

  • Six health posts were built and this has helped to improve access to healthcare for 30,000 people. In addition, medical supplies and equipment were provided to seven health centres and 28 health posts.
  • 96 health workers were trained how to facilitate immunisation campaigns in the community.
  • 772 people, including community health workers, women volunteers, health professionals and community leaders took part in training on maternal and child healthcare.

"What a surprising achievement … As a teacher and representative of the school I am feeling inspired by the works of this project every time."
