Tierrabona Project, Nicaragua

See the progress you helped make happen in your sponsored community

When the project started, one in five children were not in school and many were working to support their families. Crop yields were low, many families lacked access to clean water, and child malnutrition was common.

Thanks to your support, your sponsored child and other children in the Tierrabona community have improved access to clean water, education, healthcare and nutritious food.

Together we've achieved so much

1,331 children improved their reading skills

This followed training for 110 pre-school and primary teachers and the creation of reading clubs.

  • 490 children at risk of dropping out of school received educational materials that enabled them to continue their education.
  • 160 parents were trained to better understand their child’s educational development, especially those with children in pre-school.
  • 57 community leaders raised awareness among families on the rights of children, and the importance of protecting vulnerable children.

94 percent of children were fully immunised in 2016

This is up from 81 percent in 2008.

  • The project contributed to improved health status for 3,822 children through provision of de-worming medicine and micronutrients, and by conducting preventative health campaigns for children and families.
  • 626 malnourished children were assisted through a nutritional recovery program that taught parents how to prepare healthy family meals.
  • 360 families were provided with water filters to help them practise safe water habits. In addition, 330 families with children aged below five learned how to safely handle and store drinking water.

110 vegetable gardens have been set up

This has helped to improve the availability of nutritious food in the community.

  • Farmers have learned how to grow a wider variety of crops and how to use organic crop production methods. As a result, many are now harvesting more corn, beans and tomatoes for home consumption and to sell for income.
  • 201 youths completed vocational courses so they could start or improve small businesses.

"In coordination with World Vision we developed educational talks with parents, with the main objective being to raise awareness about the importance of the right to education."
