Satkhira Project, Bangladesh

See the progress you helped make happen in your sponsored community

When the project started, many families were struggling to earn a living or provide nutritious food for their children. School facilities were poor, child malnutrition was common and contaminated water posed a major health threat.

Thanks to your support, your sponsored child and other children in the Satkhira community have improved access to education, clean water and nutritious food and their families have new income earning opportunities.

Together we've achieved so much

86 percent of children are enrolled in secondary school

This is up from 54 percent in 2007.

  • More children are attending school and making progress following improvements to facilities and education quality in 33 primary and secondary schools.
  • Local community groups have received training and support to operate early learning centres.
  • Night schools have been set up to enable children who drop out of school early to continue learning.

100 percent of households have access to clean water

This is up from 61 percent in 2007.

  • Around 14,500 children have attended growth monitoring sessions, with ill and malnourished children referred for follow-up treatment.
  • Over 4,900 malnourished children aged below three have taken part in an intensive nutrition program.
  • Over 1,400 families have built hygienic household toilets following community education on the importance of good hygiene.

95 percent of women are engaged in earning income

This is up from 25 percent in 2000.

  • Women have joined community groups where they learn how to produce food products and handcrafts to sell in the marketplace.
  • Farmers completed training on how to improve crop production and received high-yield rice seed varieties.
  • Many of the most vulnerable families in the community have improved their incomes after skills training and provision of livestock to start dairy farming or goat raising.

"[Now] parents nurture and look after a child. In the same way World Vision helped me in my growth, nurtured me and looked after all my whereabouts and for that I am ever grateful."

- Parul, aged 25, student

“Now my children can move ahead”

“I fought an uphill battle with poverty but now, no more,” says Rozina, 28, a mother of two from the Satkhira community.

With an extended family of eight to care for, Rozina was struggling to put together just two meals each day with the small income her husband earned pulling a rented rickshaw. Things began to change, however, when she joined an income generation program supported by generous sponsors like you.

Rozina completed training on vegetable gardening and dairy farming and received a cow and a calf to get her started. “Now the number has been increased,” Rozina explained.

“I have developed a mini farm with five cows, one calf and a goat … One of the cows gives two litres of milk in a day. I sell a portion of that and the rest of the milk I keep for my children so that they have access to nutritious food."

Rozina is an active member of her local income generation group and she can now save money each month after covering household expenses.
