Portoviejo Project, Ecuador

See the progress you helped make happen in your sponsored community

When the project started, the quality of school facilities and teaching was poor, 50 percent of children were not immunised and families lacked vital health and hygiene knowledge.

Thanks to your support, your sponsored child and other children in the Portoviejo community have improved access to clean water, education, healthcare and nutritious food.

Together we've achieved so much

4,052 students gained access to safe water

Water tanks and purifiers were provided to 15 schools, as well as health centres and early learning centres.

  • The project provided families with hygiene and sanitation training and worked with community members to develop waste disposal systems.
  • 200 families learnt how to better store and handle water.

2,044 students improved their reading and maths skills

This followed teacher training and the provision of new learning resources.

  • 3,457 students received backpacks containing school supplies to support and encourage their education.
  • 1,195 adolescents gained the chance to develop vocational and business skills so they can earn a living.
  • Five Community Advocacy Offices have been set up to provide community members with safe places to report child rights abuses.
  • All children aged below five now have access to pre-school education.

100 percent of families know how to treat diarrhoea in children

78 percent of families also know initial treatments for respiratory illnesses following health education campaigns.

  • 82 percent of children aged below two have completed their full course of immunisations, up from 62 percent in 2013.
  • Nine nutrition clubs were set up, helping mothers and caregivers to learn about child nutrition and how to prepare healthy meals for their children.
  • Mothers and caregivers also learned how to create food products using soy, fish and bananas to improve their children’s nutrition and develop a new income source.

"The work of World Vision is very good because it offers workshops and campaigns ... so that we are able to help each other and teach those who do not know."
