Phoukhoun Project, Laos

See the progress you helped make happen in your sponsored community

When the project started, education quality was poor and many children had to walk around two hours to get to school. Most families were food insecure and children suffered with poor health and nutrition.

Thanks to your support, children in the Phoukhoun community are healthier and have improved access to education and clean water. Families are equipped with the skills to generate an income all-year-round.
With your help, old overcrowded classrooms have been replaced by new spacious ones where children can learn in comfort and safety.

Together we've achieved so much

99 percent of children had reached a healthy weight by 2018

This is up from 66 percent in 2009.

  • 52 healthcare workers are now trained in essential healthcare across 26 villages, which is helping improve overall wellbeing of children and families.
  • Nine in 10 families are using toilets and nearly 100 percent of households have access to safe and clean water.

2,250 farmers were trained in improved farming practices

They have gained the knowledge, skills and resources to increase crop production and earn a reliable income from farming.

  • More than 91 percent of households are consuming adequate amounts of food daily, improving overall health and nutrition, and reducing the risk of illness.

100 percent of children in the project area are attending primary school

Children now have access to new classrooms and school toilets and schools have been produced with desks and books.

  • More than 50 teachers have improved their teaching abilities and 182 people have become members of village education development committees, which is strengthening education quality.
  • New reading rooms have been set up providing children with an opportunity to learn more during and after school.
  • Parents have learned about the importance of education and many are participating in literacy promotion activities and actively encouraging their children’s learning.

"We are very happy to have reading room available in the school along with our studying because we can read anytime we like after learning hours. "

From sickness to health

Four times per day, 14-year-old Oith trekked more than two kilometres to collect water for her family. They couldn’t afford bigger water containers, nor did Oith have the strength to carry anything heavier.

There was little time for her to play, study and enjoy her childhood. The water wasn’t even clean and often made people sick.

“I was feeling very tired every time that I am carrying the water because I have to carry the water up to the mountain, especially during raining season it was harder and it’s slippery and I was falling down many times and I have to go back to get the water again,” said Oith.

With the help of supporters like you, World Vision helped install water systems and taps in Oith’s village. You also helped provide training on maintaining the water systems and helped the community establish a committee to ensure the taps are kept in good condition.

Access to clean water has improved the overall health of the village. The number of children with preventable illnesses has decreased meaning families can save money on healthcare.

"Now, water is available just near my doorstep. I have enough time to play with friends, study and help with some household chores. And I can go to school strong and healthy."
