Ocongate Project, Peru

See the progress you helped make happen in your sponsored community

When the project started, education quality was poor and almost half of all children under five were malnourished. Many children were also affected by family violence, abuse and neglect.

Thanks to your support, your sponsored child and other children in the Ocongate community have improved access to education and healthcare and they are better protected from violence and abuse.

Together we've achieved so much

23 interactive library spaces have been created in primary schools

These spaces are enabling over 2,500 students to improve their literacy skills.

  • 10 schools have been supplied with laptops, computer tablets and digital whiteboards to enhance students’ learning.
  • Four business studies centres have been set up in secondary schools to enable youth to learn entrepreneurial skills they can use to find a job or set up their own small business when they leave school.
  • Primary and secondary school teachers have improved their classroom skills after completing training in disciplines including literacy, communication, mathematics and business studies.

Eight childhood development centres have been set up

These centres help babies and toddlers develop physical, mental and social skills.

  • The project worked in collaboration with the Ministry of Health to improve child growth monitoring and treatment services available in the Ocongate Health Centre.
  • Local volunteers have been trained to become Community Health Agents. They play an important role in detecting cases of child malnutrition and ensuring that these children receive treatment through the health centre.

25 volunteers have been trained to monitor child wellbeing

These volunteers identify and report suspected cases of child abuse to authorities.

  • The project brought government agencies, municipal authorities, churches and community groups together to develop a coordinated response to cases of family violence, child abuse and neglect.
  • Public campaigns have raised awareness about child rights and the importance of preventing violence against children. The project helped to train local volunteers to lead these campaigns.

"Thanks to all the trainings received from World Vision, now I am able to help many families in my community and in other communities, so they are able to ensure respect for the rights of children."

Training and resources revitalise pre-schools

Yony is a pre-school teacher in the Ocongate community. Through the support of child sponsors like you, Yony and many other pre-school teachers have improved their classroom skills after taking part in training workshops.

They have also received colourful, fun and interactive learning aids, including musical instruments, to better engage the young learners in their care.

Even though his pre-school only has one room, Yony has been able to arrange the space so that the children feel comfortable and can enjoy learning. “We were able to arrange it with the help of the parents and the participation of boys and girls,” he explained.

Guido is one of Yony’s students and he enjoys playing with the educational toys in his classroom. “We all play with toys carefully, so the children that come after may play with them too,” Guido explained.

With your help, young children in the Ocongate community are now getting a good start to their education.

"Now, I can teach my students in a playful way, and they can learn more thanks to World Vision that is always supporting the improvement in learning of boys and girls in the district of Ocongate."
