Nuevo Milenio Project, Peru

See the progress you helped make happen in your sponsored community

When the project started, some villages did not have access to clean water and proper sanitation and diarrhoea and anemia were common. Education quality was poor and children were at risk of violence at home and in the community.

Thanks to your support, your sponsored child and other children in the Nuevo Milenio community have improved access to education, clean water and healthcare and there is more awareness about child rights.

Together we've achieved so much

120 teachers upgraded their skills

They have completed training on topics including literacy promotion, life skills education and child friendly teaching methods.

  • The project supported the creation of five community libraries and four playful learning spaces in schools to promote improved literacy.
  • Facilities at early learning centres were improved and awareness raised amongst parents about the importance of pre-school education for their children’s development. 87 percent of pre-school-aged children were attending early learning centres by 2012.
  • Four recreation centres have been set up to provide children with opportunities to participate in extra-curricular activities such as arts and crafts, dancing and aerobics.

Annual health campaigns provided vital check-ups and treatment for children

These campaigns helped over 1,835 children in 2012 alone and provided nutritional supplements to those suffering from anemia.

  • The project collaborated with community leaders and local authorities to secure improved access to clean water and sewerage services for 619 families across six villages.
  • Mothers volunteering at child daycare centres were trained on child health and nutrition topics and 12 of these volunteers enrolled in further health promotion training accredited by Peru’s Ministry of Health.
  • Parents and caregivers have learned about the importance of early stimulation for young children and hygiene practices such as hand washing to prevent diarrhoea.

3,867 children have benefited from child rights protection campaigns

A Local Action Plan has been endorsed by the District Council to promote children's rights to health and education.

  • 43 community members have been trained on child protection issues and how to monitor, report and respond to child rights violations.
  • 5,102 children and youth and 201 teachers have participated in awareness campaigns about violence and child rights to help reduce cases of bullying and violence in schools.
  • The project supported the creation of a youth citizenship organisation whose members have been trained to monitor the quality of education in local schools.

"We didn’t have before a space for the children to be safe and to learn. Seven years ago we got it and we will continue [using it]."
