Nuevo Amanecer Project, Honduras

See the progress you helped make happen in your sponsored community

When the project started, nearly half of all children weren't enrolled in school. Many families didn't have access to clean water or hygienic toilets and children were prone to malnutrition. Traditional farming skills led to low crop yields and incomes.

Thanks to your support, your sponsored child and other children in the Nuevo Amanecer community have improved access to education, clean water and toilets, healthcare and nutritious food.

Together we've achieved so much

90 percent of children were enrolled in school in 2016

The rate of school drop-outs, grade repetition and exam failure fell to two percent, down from 55 percent in 2004.

  • A major education project addressed a shortage of schools and classrooms, trained teachers and helped parents understand the value of educating children.
  • 30 schools were upgraded with new teaching materials, along with furniture, paint, flooring and ceilings to improve the educational environment for children.
  • The ministry of education has begun monitoring the quality of education in local schools.

75 percent of the community had improved access to clean water by 2014

This was up from 57 percent in 2004.

  • Six major water projects were completed to repair boreholes, install water tanks and lay pipes to bring fresh water to more families.
  • 92 percent of families had household toilets in 2014, up from 70 percent in 2004, which has helped to lower the incidence of diarrhoea and waterborne diseases.
  • 120 houses were upgraded to fix roof leaks, improve sanitation and reduce health hazards.

The child malnutrition rate fell from 46 percent to 18 percent between 2004 and 2016

A nutrition project taught parents about child nutrition and supplied over 600 children with deworming tablets and micronutrients.

  • 55 percent of families have a home vegetable garden, up from 16 percent in 2004, after 681 families were trained in vegetable production.
  • Corn harvests increased by 53 percent and coffee harvests by 54 percent between 2004 and 2015 after 800 corn farmers and 290 coffee farmers were trained in improved farming methods.
  • 95 percent of communities now have trained health committees that oversee health, nutrition and immunisation programs.

"Thanks to training by World Vision, we are able to monitor the nutrition and health of our children."
