Chongoene, Mozambique

See the progress you helped make happen in your sponsored community

When the project started, education quality was poor. Many families couldn't access clean water and lived far from the nearest health clinic so child illness and malnutrition were common.

Thanks to your support, your sponsored child and other children in the Chongoene community have better access to education, clean water and healthcare and their parents are generating higher incomes.

Before your help, many children were learning in makeshift buildings without desks, walls or proper roofing. Now they are learning in comfort and safety in well-equipped classrooms.

Together we've achieved so much

28 classrooms were built to enable more children to attend school

Schools have also been improved through construction of toilets and textbook distribution.

  • 28 school councils have been trained in education management and literacy activities, so they can better support teachers and students.
  • More parents value education and many are participating in school literacy promotion activities and actively encouraging their children’s learning.

Acute malnutrition in children under five has fallen to 0.2 percent

This is down from five percent in 1999.

  • New healthcare infrastructure has been built for HIV and AIDS counselling, testing and treatment, helping more than 2,500 adults and 200 children.
  • 17 new health committees were trained on child nutrition and disease prevention which has helped more than 3,400 households and 10,200 children.
  • The percentage of women giving birth in a healthcare facility increased from 72 percent to 92 percent which has helped to reduce mother and infant mortality.

31 boreholes were dug to increase clean water access

This has helped to reduce waterborne illness and time women and children spend collecting water.

  • People living in 28 villages and children attending 27 schools have learned about the importance of good hygiene practices such as regular handwashing.
  • Over 60 water local committees were trained in safe water handling, water conservation and borehole maintenance benefiting nearly 20,000 people.

"World Vision supported us with water supply so we have now clean and safe water and have reduced the distance to fetch water in communities."

- Anastancia, water committee member

A life-changing impact

Argentina, 11, cherishes the moment she met her sponsor who helped change her world. “I remember that visit as if it was yesterday. It was the best thing that happened to me,” she said.

She also remembers when her community struggled to survive – when people had to walk hours to reach a healthcare facility and many women and children were falling sick.

Thanks to the help of sponsors like you, her community has completely changed.  World Vision helped train health committees on hygiene promotion and disease prevention and encouraged pregnant women to seek medical assistance to avoid complications.

Argentina's family received mosquito nets and gained access to clean water following borehole construction. She no longer spends hours collecting water and can now focus on her education and achieving her dream of becoming a doctor.
