Hope and Peace Project, Cambodia

See the progress you helped make happen in your sponsored community

When the project started, families in this crowded urban area were struggling to earn a living. Many children worked instead of attending school and there were many health problems including skin diseases and child malnutrition.

Thanks to your support, your sponsored child and other children in the Hope and Peace community have improved access to education, clean water and healthcare and their families have new income earning opportunities.

Together we've achieved so much

96 percent of eligible children were enrolled in primary school in 2017

In addition, 97 percent of students assessed had reading skills appropriate for their age.

  • The project worked closely with local authorities to improve school facilities and education quality.
  • 12 learning hubs have been set up where children can practise their reading and take part in other learning activities.
  • Seven parent-teacher associations have been set up and trained how to identify children who need support with school fees.

90 percent of mothers and babies had post-birth health checks in 2017

This is up from 33 percent in 2016.

  • The project created and trained Village Health Support Groups made up of local volunteers who provide health services and health and nutrition education to families.
  • 100 percent of pregnant women gave birth in a health centre in 2017. This shows that Village Health Support Groups have been successful in educating the community about the dangers of home births.

1,304 familes had savings in 2017

This is up from 72 families with savings in 2010.

  • The project helped the poorest families start saving money and gain access to low interest loans by inviting them to join neighbourhood savings groups. On average, group members saved around US$100 each in 2017.
  • Nine Agriculture Cooperatives have been set up to help families improve their incomes. Co-op members have received training and support to run small businesses including making and selling fruit juice, cleaning products, recycled goods and rice.

"World Vision supports both the physical and mental needs of the community and understands about development. They helped people to improve bridges, roads, water filters, hygiene and sanitation."

Essential support for families in crisis

Life changed dramatically for Reach at age 13 when his father passed away after falling from a rooftop while working as an air-conditioner repairman.

This tragedy devastated his family and left his mother with the burden of supporting six children on her own.

But the family was not alone. Through the support of child sponsors like you, Reach and his siblings received school supplies and regular hot meals through a feeding program for vulnerable children. He also attends a World Vision supported children’s club where he’s learned about child rights.

“When I go to the children’s club, I am happy, because I have many friends there,” said Reach.

"Children need to be protected, because in Cambodia, families sometimes violate children’s rights. But I know my rights."
