Ga West Project, Ghana

See the progress you helped make happen in your sponsored community

When the project started, one in four children had stunted growth, less than 40 percent of children could read and write, and lack of access to clean water helped to spread disease.

Thanks to your support, your sponsored child and other children in the Ga West community have improved access to healthcare, education and clean water.

Together we've achieved so much

92 percent of children aged below five were fully immunised in 2016

This was up from 20 percent in 2014.

  • 75 percent of children are sleeping under mosquito nets to prevent malaria, up from 28 percent in 2014.
  • The rate of stunted growth in children dropped by 36 percent between 2014 and 2015. This followed a nutrition program that educated mothers on child feeding and encouraged breastfeeding.
  • 94 percent of mothers are attending at least four antenatal health appointments, up from 23 percent in 2014.
  • A hospital and a health clinic were fitted with essential medical equipment.

200 teachers completed skills training

This contributed to a 59 percent increase in the proportion of children who are literate.

  • Overcrowding eased and more children could attend lessons after two primary classrooms blocks, four pre-school blocks and an information technology classroom block were built.
  • Eight schools were furnished with desks and chairs and 20 schools were supplied with uniforms, books and stationery.
  • 14 schools were provided with rainwater tanks, ensuring that children have access to clean water to drink and wash their hands with.

21 boreholes were dug to increase access to clean water

This has helped to reduce the spread of waterborne diseases.

  • 85 percent of children wash their hands after going to the toilet and before eating, up from 68 percent in 2014, following community education on hygiene and sanitation.
  • The construction of 160 hand-washing stations in schools and five hygienic toilet blocks is contributing to a reduction in the incidence of diarrhoea in children.
  • 20 community water and sanitation teams were established and trained to ensure the new water facilities are maintained.

"I’ve learned about the importance of hand-washing. World Vision provided us with hand-washing facilities, which has put a smile on the faces of many in my school."
