East Sumba Project, Indonesia

See the progress you helped make happen in your sponsored community

When the project started, school facilities were poor and there weren't enough trained teachers. Access to clean water and healthcare was limited and farmers were struggling to meet their families' food and income needs.

Thanks to your support, your sponsored child and other children in the East Sumba community have improved access to clean water, education, healthcare and nutritious food.

Together we've achieved so much

77 wells and 11 water pipelines were built

Families in 11 villages no longer have to walk long distances to collect water and there has been a reduction in the prevalence of diseases like diarrhoea.

  • 233 toilets were built so families can improve their hygiene and reduce the spread of disease.

6,000 children received school kits to support their education

These kits included uniforms, books and stationery.

  • 10 school buildings and 12 dormitories for teachers were built and 11 school buildings were renovated.
  • 60 teachers received training, and the project helped to secure 48 temporary staff to help alleviate teacher shortages.
  • 8,991 children received birth certificates following the project’s efforts to advocate for children’s right to identity. 34 child protection committees were formed to ensure that children’s rights are respected.

5,578 children received medical check-ups

This helped to ensure that children were growing well and receiving good nutrition.

  • 21 health posts were built and 99 health workers trained to provide better health services for people attending the health posts.
  • 552 households were supported to establish vegetable gardens so they can grow more nutritious food for their families.
  • 28 farmers groups gained better access to good quality seeds, fertiliser and farm equipment, and they learned improved farming methods. This helped them to increase food production and provide their families with ongoing nutritional and financial benefits.

"Now, our children rarely get sick since we have access to clean water. "
