Dreib El Awssat Project, Lebanon

See the progress you helped make happen in your sponsored community

When the project started, there was a shortage of safe places for children to play and many were at risk of violence at home and at school. Many were also dropping out of school and without the right skills and support, faced a difficult future.

Thanks to your support, your sponsored child and other children in the Dreib Al Awssat community have safe places to play and learn and they are better protected from harm. Youth have learned skills so they can develop reliable incomes.

Together we've achieved so much

New safe spaces for children to play and learn have been created

These include a sports field, a park and a computer centre that cater for 600 children and youth.

  • Four pre-schools and three primary classrooms were provided with equipment and resources to enhance children’s learning.
  • Students have participated in workshops on good hygiene and healthy eating and they have been encouraged to share the knowledge they gained with family and friends.
  • 22 teachers completed a 2017 workshop on teaching strategies for children with learning difficulties.

30 youth have completed vocational skills training to improve their job prospects

Five top performing trainees received grants from the United Nations and the Embassy of Japan to start their own businesses.

  • Over 200 youth aged 17-25 took part in a range of training and awareness workshops aimed at improving their ability to find employment. Topics covered included communication skills, team building and leadership, business language skills and how to prepare a CV.

Four Child Protection Committees have been created

These committees are now working to ensure that children’s rights are upheld.

  • Two youth centres have been set up to provide a place where children and youth can meet and work together on community improvement initiatives focused on child wellbeing.
  • In 2016, 30 youth completed training on child rights and child protection issues so they can become more effective advocates for children in their community.
  • A child protection reporting and referral system has been established in one village in a collaboration between the project, schools and local authorities.

" I have benefited personally as a father and as superintendent of a school. Also, teachers working with us have acquired the knowledge to deal with [child protection issues]. "
