Camino Hacia La Esperanza Project, Colombia

See the progress you helped make happen in your sponsored community

When the project started, only one in five households was connected to the city water supply, education quality was poor, and low incomes meant that many families struggled to meet their children's basic needs.

Thanks to your support, your sponsored child and other children in the Camino Hacia La Esperanza community have improved access to clean water, nutritious food, education and future income opportunities.

Together we've achieved so much

The percentage of homes with piped water supply reached 92 percent by 2015

This is up from 33 percent in 2010.

  • Families learned about safe water and hygiene practices to protect their children's health.
  • A team of volunteers has been formed and trained to prevent and respond to disaster risks and to maintain sewerage and drainage networks.

100 teachers completed skills training

In addition, children's reading and comprehension skills improved with the introduction of new literacy tools in schools.

  • School leavers have access to vocational training and job opportunities in fields including mechanics, accounting, logistics and customer service.
  • Over 1,000 parents and guardians took part in training on positive parenting skills and learned how they can support their children's education.
  • Children and youth gained opportunities to develop skills in, and play, sports including soccer, basketball and volleyball.

An organic orchard has been set up to provide income earning opportunities

Training in organic farming and produce marketing has also been provided.

  • Women have completed training in income generation skills such as pickling fruit and vegetables, ceramics, jewellery making and patchwork quilting.

"The children have learned so much and we, as volunteers, have also learned so many things that I will always treasure in my heart."
