Busangi Project, Tanzania

See the progress you helped make happen in your sponsored community

When the project started, one in four children weren't enrolled in schools, which lacked classrooms and well-trained teachers. There were no health clinics and farmers were struggling to grow enough food to last all year round.

Thanks to your support, your sponsored child and other children in the Busangi community have improved access to clean water, education, healthcare and nutritious food.

Together we've achieved so much

98 percent of children were enrolled in school in 2016

This is up from 73 percent when the project started in 2001.

  • Improvements to local primary schools included construction of 54 classroom blocks and 36 toilet blocks, renovation of 12 classroom blocks, provision of 1,500 desks and construction of 35 teachers’ houses.
  • 248 teachers completed training in mathematics, languages and sciences, as well as modern teaching methods.
  • Parent Teacher Associations were trained how to run school lunch programs and these have helped to raise the primary school enrolment rate and provide children with an important additional source of nutrition.

A health centre and six pharmacies were built and equipped with solar power

This has dramatically improved people’s access to healthcare.

  • 3,800 mothers and other caregivers learned how to improve their children's health and nutrition and 3,000 children received mosquito nets to protect them from malaria.
  • 20 boreholes were dug and 40 technicians trained how to maintain and repair hand pumps. This has increased the proportion of people who can access clean water in under 30 minutes from home to 76 percent.
  • 60 health workers were trained in sanitation and health and they now spread messages in the community about the importance of hand-washing and other hygiene practices.

560 farmers learned new farming techniques to grow more food

They have increased their maize harvest from 15 bags on average in 2015 to 20 bags in 2016.

  • 145 ox-ploughs were introduced to help farmers prepare their land for crop production more efficiently and increase the amount of land they can cultivate.
  • 37 water dams were dug to improve access to water for irrigation.
  • Savings groups have been formed and they are an important source of funds that community members can borrow to support their income generation activities or to cover household costs.

"Community training gave us an understanding of the importance of education, and motivated parents to enrol many children in school, both girls and boys."
