Bayankhongor Project, Mongolia

See the progress you helped make happen in your sponsored community

When the project started, unemployment was high and child labour and child abuse were serious problems. Malnutrition and poor maternal healthcare contributed to a high rate of infant deaths.

Thanks to your support, your sponsored child and other children in the Bayankhongor community have improved access to education and healthcare and their families have new income opportunities.

Together we've achieved so much

78 percent of children aged 2-5 now have access to pre-school

In 2016 alone, 700 children who had not attended pre-school before enrolled in classes.

  • 9,072 children benefited from upgrades to schools, along with homework clubs, life skills education and extra-curricular activities.
  • 1,845 pre-school-aged children benefited from new furniture and equipment in 15 kindergartens, while three schools gained new classrooms.
  • Six child protection teams were established in the community and trained how to prevent and report physical and sexual abuse, child labour, exploitation and bullying.

The infant mortality rate has fallen by 13 percent

This followed child nutrition projects, better access to healthcare for mothers and pregnant women, and child immunisation.

  • Over 88 percent of women are accessing antenatal care in the first trimester of pregnancy and over 99 percent are attending at least six check-ups during their pregnancy.
  • The prevalence of underweight children dropped by 35 percent in 2016, adding to child health gains made over the life of the project.
  • 1,711 parents and caregivers were involved in nutrition training and over 700 people were trained in caring for children aged under five and how to identify and treat common illnesses like anaemia and diarrhoea.

328 families increased their livestock holdings

This was achieved through a lamb "pass-on" scheme where farmers borrow their first lambs for breeding and keep the offspring.

  • 1,370 people are members of 80 savings groups, pooling their savings to fund small business loans, education and the purchase of household goods.
  • Farming groups have been trained in diversifying their vegetable crops and harvested over 21 tonnes of potatoes to sell to increase their incomes.
  • Vocational training in sewing, carpentry, boot-making and food processing helped provide the community with more employment opportunities.

"Our family raised 54 lambs through the lamb project … I wish for other families to have the same opportunity to change their life."
