The purpose and components of the Human Development Index are outlined. A global choropleth map shows the relative assessed levels of development by country. The Human Development Index components are listed for nine countries, providing a comparative example. Using a separate worksheet [Human development index (p 6-7)], students graph and analyse the comparative data.
