Open up opportunities for girls
COVID-19 has changed life for us all. But its economic effects are driving the world’s most vulnerable families deeper into poverty. Desperate parents are marrying their daughters off early – just so they and their families can eat. Already, 23 girls under 18 are married every minute. And because of the pandemic, the United Nations forecasts 13 million more child marriages over the next 10 years.
Early marriage can endanger a girl’s health, cut short her education, limit her hopes and dreams, and increase her likelihood of remaining in poverty.
81.7% of every dollar you donate helps children and communities through field programs and advocacy work
Girls who are in school are less likely to become child brides. They have the chance to determine their own future and break the poverty cycle. You’ll help improve access to quality education, including through school supplies, classroom repairs, and training for teachers and parents.
With stable incomes, families aren’t under extreme financial pressure that can lead them to marry off their daughters early. You’ll support families to sustainably provide for their children, including through microloans, business training and skills training.
Girls are less likely to be forced into marriage when communities overcome harmful beliefs and practices and champion children’s rights. You’ll help us work with families, communities and governments to protect girls and boys from all forms of exploitation.
Access to reproductive health services can reduce teenage pregnancies and the pressure on girls to marry. You’ll help improve child and community health through access to essential services, vaccinations, medical clinics and training in disease prevention.
When families can provide for all their children, early marriage doesn’t become a survival mechanism. You’ll help ensure children are healthy and well-nourished, creating sustainable food supplies through agricultural programs and nutritional training.
Access to essentials like clean water helps lift communities from poverty – a major cause of child marriage. You’ll help provide access to safe drinking water and improve hygiene and sanitation, reducing child mortality and freeing up time for education.

World Vision Child Sponsorship changes children’s lives by transforming the area where they live. Using your
donations, we identify the causes of children’s poverty and vulnerability and create development projects to
1. Building a relationship
You’ll hear from your sponsored child within the first six
months of sponsorship. Then you can get to know each other through letters and cards if you would like to.
It’s part of the joy of child sponsorship!
In your child’s community, we partner with individuals and groups to understand their needs, goals and
resources – and find long-term solutions to overcome poverty and improve children’s wellbeing.
2. Changing a child’s world
Your sponsorship donations support projects and activities
designed to meet local needs and transform the world where your sponsored child lives. We’ll send you progress
reports about the change you’re helping to make possible.
We adapt plans as we begin to see change in children’s lives – so that the community continues to meet its
goals. As more local people get involved, they take increasing ownership of their success.
3. Preparing for a brighter future
As a child sponsor, you’ll hear how you’re supporting
work that helps prepare and equip your sponsored child’s community to continue its own development activities,
without World Vision’s assistance.
As we prepare to leave, and your sponsorship draws to a close, it’s time to celebrate! Thanks to support from
Australians like you, families enjoy better living conditions and are empowered with knowledge and skills to
create a brighter future for their children.
Yes. For the foreseeable future, we’re combining 20 percent of your sponsorship donations with those of other
sponsors to support our COVID-19 response in your sponsored child’s country.
Now more than ever, vulnerable communities need support to help protect children and their families from
COVID-19 and the social and economic hardship it can create. With ongoing support from child sponsors, we have
been on the ground helping communities prepare for and stop the spread of the virus from the very first
In the immediate term, our project work is focused specifically on providing essentials like clean water, to
enable effective handwashing; nutritious food, to help parents provide for their families while they’re unable
to work in lockdown; healthcare and supplies; educational opportunities, even when schools are closed; and so
In due course, we will refocus on other critical areas of need, specific to each community, to continue
helping the most vulnerable children thrive – both now and into the future.
Our work is made possible by the support of generous Australians.
We work hard to make sure all resources are used as efficiently and effectively as possible to bring maximum
impact to children in need.
Every dollar you contribute helps the work of World Vision, with 81.7% of funds dedicated to field programs
and advocacy work.
We take financial accountability very seriously. Our financial statements are externally audited (in the same
way and to the same standards which apply to Australian companies) and our annual reports are prepared to
internationally acknowledged standards of transparency for not-for-profits.

Child sponsorship is a very special journey that develops over time. That’s why we encourage you to view
sponsorship as a long-term partnership. Sponsors tell us how much they enjoy watching their sponsored child
grow up, as their support makes a real difference from year to year.
But we understand that your circumstances may change, and that’s why you can cancel your sponsorship at any
time, for any reason. If that happens, we’ll continue to care for the child you’ve sponsored through our work
in the community and may give them the opportunity of connecting with a new sponsor.
If you don’t wish to cancel your sponsorship, but would like to adjust your donations, we have flexible
options to help you continue your support in a way that suits you.
You may also like to consider sharing the cost of child sponsorship with others. Some sponsors team up with a
friend, family member, or a group of people. It's also possible to transfer your existing child sponsorship to
someone else if you'd like.
Simply get in touch with us on 13 32 40 if you’d like to discuss your options or cancel your sponsorship.
