Building toilets

Some communities use the bush or shallow hand-dug pits as toilets. When it rains, human waste could be washed into open water sources and cause contamination. Many diseases can be spread this way, such as Hepatitis A.

Build a pit latrine

  • A very deep pit is built in the ground and secured to prevent caving.
  • The pit is then covered with boards, leaving an opening at the centre.
  • A bench with a hole is then positioned above the opening as a toilet seat, and a cubicle is built around the bench.
  • Once the pit is filled it is covered and a new pit is built.
  • Pit latrines are sanitary and sturdy constructions built to last for years.
