Drilling boreholes

Drilling a borehole is one of the best ways to provide communities with a reliable supply of clean water and reduce travelling time to collect water from other water sources.

Drilling a borehole

  • A suitable site is first identified by project staff working together with the community, making sure water is available and that the soil is suitable for drilling.
  • A drilling machine is used to bore deep into the ground to reach a sustained water layer.
  • A hand or foot-operated pump is then installed on the surface to draw up the water through a pipe.
