More than 500 million people throughout the developing world are self employed or earn their livelihoods through micro enterprise.

Esme and her husband Kennedy received a loan to expand their grocery store through a World Vision micro finance project.

Micro enterprises employ up to five people in small trading and retail activities; others make goods such as pots, pans and furniture.

Many of these micro entrepreneurs are unable to grow their businesses because they do not have access to financial services, such as loans or a safe place to hold their savings.

When there are no banks or other financial institutions to serve them, these small business people have to rely on family and friends for financial support. Others resort to money lenders who often charge extremely high interest rates, making it impossible to pay loans without falling further into debt.

Through micro finance projects, World Vision provides financial services (credit, savings, insurance and money transfers) to people who don’t have access to the formal banking sector. In addition to providing financial services, micro finance projects also offer training and advice on how to run a business.

How you can help

Community Banks

An African lady is making a garment using a treadle-operated sewing machine.

As well as access to financial services, project beneficiaries also receive training and advice on how to run a successful business.

World Vision helps to establish Community Banks to provide local entrepreneurs with access to credit to start or expand on small business activities.

A typical loan ranges between $70-$700 and it is accompanied by business training and ongoing support. Each Community Bank may have between 30-60 members who agree to cross-guarantee each others’ loan, ensuring that the entire community works together for successful outcomes.

You can help World Vision establish Community Banks by making a donation to our Micro Enterprise Development Program. Your support will not only help change life for one hardworking entrepreneur, but create jobs and new opportunities for an entire community.
