Smiles Day 2011: resources

Wednesday 25 May 2011 is World Vision's Smiles Day. If your school registers its interest in participating (more information is available here), you'll be sent a FREE Smiles Day Fundraising Kit, filled with fantastic educational resources to teach your students about global issues.

You can also download many of the resources below, so take a look!

The Smiles Day Fundraising Kit contains a CD full of fun classroom activities and educational resources. These have been developed for a range of class levels, and will not only complement any fundraising activities your school might conduct on Smiles Day, but could also be used for other classroom activities.

You can get your whole school involved in Smiles Day using the resources provided.

Classroom activities

The resources below are organised according to activity. Each folder includes the necessary teacher’s notes and instructions.

These resources can be adapted for all primary school years; however we have grouped the activities according to lower and upper primary years.

We invite you to download these and take a look. Enjoy your exploration, and don't forget - you can find out how to get involved with Smiles Day 2011 here!

HINTS AND TIPS FOR ‘DIY’ SMILES DAY MEDIA

Let your local community know what your school is doing for Smiles Day 2011.

  • Decide what your school will be doing to raise awareness and funds for Smiles Day 2011, eg. are you having a crazy hair day, a cake stall or have your students created a new fundraising event?
  • Identify the local newspaper/s where your students live. You can find these at:

    http://www.fcnonline.com.au
    http://www.newsspace.com.au/
    http://www.newspapers.com.au

  • Stage a “mock event/photo opportunity” and invite the local media to come along. A great photograph is a key ingredient in gaining media coverage.
  • The newspaper will probably also want a short interview, so designate a spokesperson who can talk about what your school is doing and why you’re supporting Smiles Day.

Remember that;

  • Local newspapers are sometimes resource poor and may not have a journalist or photographer available at time you’ve specified, so be flexible.
  • Most local newspapers come out weekly. You’ll need to provide about 1-2 weeks’ notice for coverage of your event in the relevant edition.

Have fun and good luck!
