About the UN Conference
The annual conference is the premier event for Non Governmental Organizations at the UN. It will bring together NGO leaders and policy experts from around the world will convene on the topic of global health as it relates to the
Millennium Development Goals (MDG's) Three of the MDGs focus specifically on health:
- Goal 4, reducing child mortality
- Goal 5, improving maternal health
- Goal 6, combating HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases
The conference will help inform the UN General Assembly’s Summit to review the Millennium Development Goals.
About Making Health Global
The public program will appeal to Melbourne’s diverse range of communities, enjoying support of partners including the Melbourne Writers Festival , Make Poverty History, AFL and the Melbourne Football Club. Melbourne Writers Festival will explore the theme of the Conference; Advance Global Health; Achieve the Millennium Development Goals through a series of public events and discussions.
Beginning with 'Eight Ways to Be Human' at Melbourne Town Hall on Friday August 27, 'Poverty Whose Problem is it?' featuring Tim Costello on Saturday September 4 and a discussion with writers called 'On the ground' on Sunday September 5.
The AFL, the Melbourne Football Club and World Vision have teamed up to raise awareness about the urgent need to improve the health of children living in poor communities around the world. On the 29 September, the match between Melbourne and North Melbourne has been dedicated to Making Health Global, find out more here.
There will be also a special church service focused on the MDGs held at St Paul’s Cathedral, Melbourne on August 29 at 2pm.
