Photo Blog: A Photographer in Dadaab

Published: 11 May 2012

  1. Dead cattle litter the area in varying states of decay.
  2. Drought refugees continue to flood into Dadaab camp in Kenya. Circumstances remain difficult for them, even when they reach the safety of the camp.
  3. Isnino’s husband cannot help her build their house today. He is busy with a heartrending task, washing the body of his nephew, Ibrahim, who died two days ago. “It was because of hunger,” says Isnino.
  4. Isnino is a new refugee from Somalia. She exchanged conflict and drought in Somalia for refugee status in Kenya and a small plot of land on which to start afresh.
  5. Alihassan arrived at the camp a week ago after a month’s journey. He is hungry and afraid of the wild animals outside his tent - especially the lions and the hyenas.
  6. Isnino, 22, builds a shelter on her second night in Dadaab camp. She uses sticks and branches that she has cut or dug out of the dirt and covers these with scraps of cloth she has borrowed and burlap sacks that used to contain food.
  7. Blowing sand adds to the misery of Dadaab camp.

Jon Warren, the award-winning Photo Director for World Vision, is currently travelling around East Africa to tell stories of World Vision’s work and to document the current emergency hunger situation. Along the way he’ll be sending us his photos from his camera and phone as often as he can.

Let's talk about it
