The concerns for Indigenous Australians are many. Compared to non-Indigenous Australians, our Indigenous children are nearly three times as likely to die before their first birthday, two-thirds will not finish secondary school and on average they will die 20 years earlier than the wider Australian population.

World Vision’s ongoing work with Australia’s Indigenous people is through invitation into communities and is based upon consultation with community leaders and members to ascertain the role we can best play in the ongoing development of these communities.

We aim to:

  • Facilitate effective sustainable development in Indigenous Australia through quality long-term community based programs
  • Increase opportunities for Indigenous youth through education, skills and training development
  • Advocate and raise awareness on Indigenous issues and disadvantage in the wider community.

Communities We Work With

World Vision is currently working in two regions in Australia, the Northern Territory and Western Australia.

In 2002, World Vision was invited by the Wetenngerr community in the Northern Territory to work in partnership on health promotion programs and more recently on governance and leadership issues.

In 2003, a partnership was formed with the Indigenous community of Armadale in Perth, Western Australia. The Armadale Youth Program assists Aboriginal leaders as they work with urban youth. It aims to foster young Indigenous people's understanding of their own culture, provide recreational opportunities and develop vocational and life skills.

World Vision combines a long term commitment to seeing the rights of Indigenous Australians upheld, with a flexible approach designed to ensure our programs respond to the dynamic and changing needs of Indigenous communities. These community based programs are just some of many planned for the future.
