Speak to your church

As voices demanding an end to poverty join together, the volume gets louder and more and more people are forced to listen. The Church is the perfect place for this momentum to start.

Command them to do good, to be rich in good deeds, and to be generous and willing to share. 1 Timothy 6:18

The Church is not driven by sales or profit and doesn’t have to compete for popularity. It simply has to speak the truth - that God does not want anyone, created in His image, to die needlessly because of poverty.

There are many ways that you can raise awareness about poverty in your church. Why not try some of these suggestions:

  • Regularly update your church noticeboard with prayer needs, Bible references, articles about poverty and ways in which people can get involved.
  • Invite a World Vision Representative to speak at your church.
  • Ask you pastor to present a series of sermons on the themes of mercy and justice.
  • Download a Bible study series and run it in your small group.
  • Visit www.stir.org.au and become a stirrer.
  • Ask your church leadership to sign up to the Micah Challenge
  • Promote events and campaigns that seek to end poverty.
  • Share your testimony of how God has challenged you to put your faith in action and how this has affected your faith journey.
  • Share the facts about poverty and injustice with others, but also try and inspire them with stories that show positive transformation is taking place in the developing world.

World Vision Australia CEO Tim Costello speaks to a gathering at Scotch College in Melbourne.

World Vision has a wealth of experience, training and knowledge that you can drawn on by inviting one of our representatives to speak at your church.

We are passionate about the issues. World Vision representatives can share their knowledge on the issues surrounding poverty, such as HIV and AIDS, people trafficking, water and sanitation, food security, education and health. They can explain how poverty impacts children and families in the developing world and share what World Vision is doing in the field to bring change and create hope.

We are equally zealous about the mandate given by God for His Church to be people who demonstrate mercy and who work for justice. We know that the poor have a special place in God’s heart. Inviting a World Vision representative to come and share this knowledge and passion at your church service or event could be a great catalyst to spur your church into action.

If you would like to arrange for a World Vision representative to speak at your church, contact the World Vision Church Relationships Manager in your area.

Tim Costello encourages Christians to follow in the footsteps of people like Nelson Mandela who were compelled by their faith to speak out about injustice.
