Past Emergency appeals
Indonesia Earthquake
Just before 6 o’clock on the morning of the 27th of May 2006, a 6.3 magnitude earthquake devastated the ancient royal city of Yogyakarta on the Indonesian island of Java. Initial fears of a tsunami were thankfully proven to be ill-founded.
But over 5,000 people were killed in the quake, and a further 38,000 were injured. Over half a million houses were damaged in the event, leaving more than a million people homeless.
In the first few days after the earthquake, World Vision provided immediate relief to those affected in the form of tarpaulins, blankets, and clothing. High-energy biscuits were given out to young, hungry children. In the first week of the response 30,000 people were provided with items such as hygiene kits, cooking stoves, kerosene lamps, and flashlights.
In addition, the generosity of our supporters enabled World Vision to support seven community health centres by providing them with medicines, sanitary facilities and bedding. Water tanks, waters pumps, generators, lighting and tents were also provided to assist these clinics.
