Flooding impacts millions across India, Nepal, Bangladesh and Vietnam
The monsoon rains that began in June 2008 have displaced millions and killed more than 1,500 people across South Asia. India, Nepal, Bangladesh and Vietnam have all been impacted.
India
For updates on the flooding in India please see the India Floods Appeal page.
Nepal
Following torrential rains on 19 September, almost 180,000 people have been displaced by flooding and landslides in Nepal’s western Terai. Kailali and Kanchanpur districts are the worst affected. The sudden and unexpected flooding in the west is unrelated to the devastating floods in early September in Eastern Terai which displaced thousands in Nepal, India and Bangladesh after Nepal’s Kosi River changed course and breached its banks.
World Vision is providing relief supplies including ready-to-eat food items and non-food items to some of the worst-affected areas in western Nepal. As an immediate response to the flooding World Vision worked with partner agencies to deliver urgent humanitarian supplies via a helicopter.
Earlier this month World Vision provided food and blankets to people living in temporary shelter sites in eastern Nepal and established ten Child Friendly Spaces for children to play in a safe environment.
Bangladesh
Flooding in early September affected more than 600,000 people in 22 districts of Bangladesh. The flooding inundated almost 266,582 acres of crops and caused the closure of 124 schools.
World Vision distributed relief supplies to 300 families and has prepared survival kits for families taking shelter in higher ground.
Vietnam
Heavy rains and landslides in northern Vietnam have killed 32 people and destroyed thousands of homes. Earlier this month river levels in the Mekong Delta region of southern Vietnam caused flooding in some of the areas.
World Vision does not have programme work in the affected area and is not currently planning a response.

Australian Sponsored Children
In India, Bangladesh, and Vietnam no areas where children sponsored by Australians live have been reported as affected by flooding.
In Nepal, one area where Australian sponsored children live has been affected, the Kailali program. Australian sponsored children and their families are amongst those receiving World Vision emergency supplies.
Please be assured that if we receive information of concern regarding any sponsored children we will contact the sponsor as a matter of urgency.
