Shwe Ba is safe again

Shwe Ba hard at work during welding training. When he finishes vocational training he will become independent, after spending several years at World Vision's Street Children Centre.

Shwe Ba was born in a small cemetery in the town of Thanlyin, Myanmar. Named after a famous actor, he has already grown to be like this film star who overcame every obstacle against the odds.

When Shwe Ba’s father died, his family was forced to beg at train stations for survival. Regularly beaten by his stepfather, Shwe Ba was only seven years old when he ran away to live on the street alone.

He lived a hard life, but after some time was lucky enough to be introduced to World Vision's Street Children Centre in the capital Yangon, where he was fed and sheltered, and lived in safety. But, after only a few months, he left to live on the street again.

Forced to beg once more, Shwe Ba was eventually captured by the police. He then spent four years in various juvenile centres before being released and ultimately returning to the World Vision centre.

Shwe Ba, now 17, is safe again and World Vision has sent him for training in various vocational skills. Proudly employed, he earns a small income from working at bicycle repair shops and traditional handicraft stores.
