Lifeline for children affected by HIV and AIDS
When Genesia became sick, her friend encouraged her to go to the hospital and get tested for HIV and AIDS. Heartbreakingly, she tested positive. Her husband had died of AIDS five years ago, but so far she hasn’t had the courage to tell her young children that she now has the same illness.
Genesia’s two daughters are Desta, nine, and Aisha, seven. They live with her in Chencha, Ethiopia, and are supported by the World Vision HIV and AIDS Orphans Project. Desta is in third grade while little Aisha is in kindergarten, and as part of the project, World Vision provides the girls with notebooks and helps to pay their school fees.
World Vision also provides the small family with food, which includes flour and oil.
Genesia is learning to cope. Thanks to World Vision she has received counselling and health support, and the local hospital provides her with nutritional supplements. She has also joined the community support network where they give her advice for living with HIV and AIDS.
