Background
Sri Lanka is an island in the Indian Ocean separated from India by a narrow strait. Most of Sri Lanka’s 18.9 million people live in the southwest and centre of the island. Although Sri Lanka has achieved impressive progress in reducing rates of child mortality, increasing life expectancy and achieving high literacy rates, many families still live in poverty with 40 percent unable to meet their basic needs. Many children suffer from malnutrition and illness linked to unsafe drinking water and poor sanitation. Two decades of civil war has damaged the economy and divided communities but a peace treaty signed in 2002 gives some hope for the future.
World Vision Australia is working with the communities in Sri Lanka. Below are examples of funded projects:
Area Development Program (ADP)
This project works with people in the northern part of the island who have been displaced by the civil war. The aim of the project is to assist the communities to become self reliant.
Communities are supported find solutions to overcome the deep rooted causes of poverty in the area. They are working to become a united and economically prosperous community.
