Background
Located in Central America, Nicaragua is the poorest country in the western hemisphere. In the last century, Nicaraguans have struggled to overcome the consequences of political dictatorship, civil war, economic sanctions and natural disasters. Many of Nicaragua's five million people do not have access to safe water, sanitation facilities or electricity. One-quarter of children under the age of five are malnourished.
World Vision Australia is working with the communities in Nicaragua. Below is an example of a funded project:
Area Development Program (ADP)
The principles of sustainable development, such as strengthening community organisations, promoting self-management and participation and providing opportunities for community leadership drive all activities in this project.
Initiatives include: enhancing community networks; developing mothers to mothers groups; and developing health programs for children and young people. In addition, children and young people are encouraged to participate as agents for change in the economic and organisational development in their villages. This stimulates the development of skills and talents which increases young people's chances of finding jobs.
