Background
The Republic of Chad is in the middle of Africa. The Sahara
Desert dominates the country’s north and most of Chad's
7.5 million people live in the sub-tropical region in the
south. Despite rich sources of gold, uranium and oil, Chad
is one of the world's poorest countries. Drought and war have
hugely impacted on the people, with many forced to leave their
homes and lose valuable crops and livestock. Many households
do not have a safe water supply or health facilities within
easy reach. Malaria, tuberculosis, measles and meningitis
are prevalent.
World Vision Australia is working with the communities in Chad. Below is an example of a funded project:
Area Development Programs (ADPs)
Wells are constructed and communities taught how to maintain
them. Farmers receive training, tools and high quality sorghum,
maize and groundnut seeds to ensure that they have enough
to eat. In addition, some rural communities are supported
to construct and manage grain stores to guard against hunger
before the next harvest. Young children are immunised against
killer diseases and health workers are trained. Literacy classes
and small business training help to improve the status of
women.
