Background

Senegal is home to over 10 million people. Located on the coast of West Africa, Senegal is one of the most stable countries in the region and has a democratically elected government. However, many people have trouble supporting their families because the country has a high foreign debt that has resulted in the devaluation of the local currency. Many Senegalese families grow their own food which can lead to disaster in times of drought. Health care services are of a low standard and only half of the population have access to safe water. Very few students continue their education after primary school.

World Vision Australia is working with the communities in Senegal. Below are examples of funded projects:

Area Development Projects (ADPs)

These projects support communities to provide access to safe water, sanitation facilities and education. Basic health care is also a priority. Small loans and community credit schemes allow community members to start small businesses so that they can generate their own income.

Community Health Project

The major component of this project is to provide education on maternal health and child care.
