World Vision Australia has been supporting emergency relief and community development projects in Rwanda since the 1994 genocide. We currently fund seven projects in Rwanda:

  • Two Child Sponsorship projects (known as Area Development Programs or ADPs)
  • Two projects funded through our Rwanda Orphans Sponsorship program
  • One Gift-in-Kind project
  • Two projects co-funded by AusAID, the Australian Government's overseas aid agency, and Australian donors.

What is an ADP?

Funded by Child Sponsorship, ADPs focus on the wellbeing of children. Operating across neighbouring communities of 10,000-150,000 people, World Vision staff work in partnership with local families to enable them to work towards their own development.

The aim is to empower people to address the causes of poverty in their community, and create a brighter future for their children, through activities such as healthcare, agricultural training, income generation and education.

Below are brief descriptions of some of our projects.

Mukamuramutsa Emerance is a 30-year-old mother of three.

Mukamuramutsa Emerance is a 30-year-old mother of three. She is actively involved in the farming association as part of the Rebero Area Development Programme, and works as a volunteer in the community store, where farmers stockpile their seeds for coming seasons, as well as purchase farming inputs like tools, fertilisers, pesticides and seeds.

Rebero ADP

HIV/AIDS is a huge problem in this area, so the Rebero ADP places strong emphasis on HIV/AIDS prevention and education, as well as caring for people living with the condition.

Other project activities include support for children's education, by providing assistance with uniforms, books and school supplies, training in malaria control and other measures to reduce disease and improve the community's health. Farmers are also being introduced to more efficient agricultural practices, so children and families can have sufficient nutritious food year-round.

Orphans and Vulnerable Children (OVCs)

Rwanda has over 650,000 orphans and vulnerable children resulting from the genocide and the impact of HIV/AIDS. World Vision is assisting OVCs to learn life-skills and attend vocational training courses. Small business loans are offered to help young people establish their livelihood. Some OVCs have been trained in HIV/AIDS counselling and human rights awareness.

A mentoring program links OVCs with trained community members to provide them with friendship, practical assistance, care and advocacy.

Note: Other World Vision projects within Rwanda are funded by World Vision offices in other countries. The above information only relates to projects funded by World Vision Australia.
