Background
India is one of the most densely populated nations in the
world, being home to more than one billion people. Most Indians
earn their living through agriculture, but more than three-quarters
of the population are living on less than US$2 a day. Many
Indians are still affected by the caste system and thousands
of children are subjected to forced labour and exploitation.
Because it is difficult for many families to access health
services, many children die from preventable diseases. Education
systems are inadequate with many schools lacking essential
resources and qualified teachers.
World Vision Australia is working with communities in India. Below are examples of funded projects:
Area Development Programs (ADPs)
Area Development Programs in India are currently providing
over 17,000 children and their families with access to clean
water, sanitation facilities, primary health care and education.
Other activities include updating agricultural techniques
and introducing new crop varieties to ensure the food security
of communities.
Female Infanticide Prevention
This project aims to prevent female infanticide by educating
families and communities. Activities include: home visitation;
identification of families at risk; pre-natal care; prevention
rallies and seminars; awareness raising within the community;
and a microenterprise development component to empower women.
Child Labour
This project involves raising awareness and educating parents,
businesses and companies about child labour. The ultimate
aim is to release children from bonded labour. These projects
are essential in transforming the lives of thousands of children.
