Background
The People’s Republic of China is the world’s
most populous country and is home to over 1.2 billion people.
China’s fast growing economy has contributed to major
environment issues such as air and water pollution, deforestation
and soil erosion. Massive amounts of agricultural land has
been destroyed, making it difficult for farmers to effectively
produce their crops. More than half the population live on
less than US$2 a day, with many children not getting their
nutritional requirements met. More than 50 percent of the
population do not have access to adequate sanitation facilities:
resulting in hygiene problems.
World Vision Australia is working with communities
in China. Below are examples of funded projects:
Area Development Programs (ADPs)
World Vision works with communities to improve their standard
of living and provide them with opportunities to overcome
poverty. These programs focus on food production, increased
access to education for girls, health care and improved infrastructure.
Food Security
World Vision is working with communities to develop their
agricultural practices, and improve their crop production.
Workshops on Sloping Agricultural Land Technology (SALT) have
been conducted; new seeds to increase crop yields were introduced;
comprehensive forestry plans designed and training in organic
farming techniques provided. These projects are assisting
the community with future food security.
