Background
Situated in Southeast Asia, Cambodia is home to over 12 million
people. Most Cambodians live in rural areas and face extreme
poverty. There is limited access to safe drinking water, contributing
to the spread of preventable diseases. Only 18 percent of
the population have adequate sanitation facilities and essential
drugs are available to less than half the population. After
years of civil war, the country's economy has suffered dramatically.
Simple infrastructures like roads and basic bridges have not
been restored, making it difficult for communities to trade.
Landmines are scattered throughout the country and make agriculture
and travel extremely dangerous.
World Vision Australia is working with communities
in Cambodia. Below are examples of funded projects:
Area Development Programs (ADPs)
More than 5000 sponsored children and their families are
benefiting from ADPs in Cambodia. Community members have been
educated about a range of health care issues such as nutrition,
hygiene and disease prevention. Communities now have access
to safe drinking water and adequate sanitation facilities.
These projects provide crucial support for families struggling
to overcome poverty.
Mine Clearance
World Vision is working with communities to clear landmines,
to create safe areas for children to go to school and for
families to live and farm. Many people have lost limbs because
of mine accidents. They are trained in a range of activities
such as agriculture practices as well as engine, television
and radio repair. This enables them to earn an income.
Microenterprise Development
Microenterprise Development Projects provide families and
communities access to business loans and training to establish
their own small businesses. As a result, community members
have the opportunity to supplement their income and support
their family.
