1. Will a move into the Not for Profit sector damage my career?

A move into the not for profit sector will in no way damage your career.World Vision Australia functions in a similar way to organisations in the commercial sector. World Vision Australia is an extremely professional organisation, which uses corporate practices that you would find in any business.

Within World Vision you will have the opportunity to develop your career whilst also assisting the organisation to work towards the elimination of world poverty.

2. How many staff does World Vision employ?

World Vision International employs approximately 22,500 staff worldwide.

World Vision Australia employs over 500 staff and has an annual income in excess of A$350 million. Our head office is located in East Burwood, Melbourne and we have state offices in Western Australia, South Australia, Victoria, New South Wales, ACT, Tasmania and Queensland.

3. What’s the difference between World Vision Australia and World Vision International?

World Vision Australia is part of the World Vision International Partnership which operates in 97 countries. It is a partnership of interdependent national offices, most of which are governed by local boards or advisory councils.

Whilst we are accountable to other World Vision offices, World Vision Australia is a distinct legal entity. Together with our partner offices, we are responsible for the design, monitoring and evaluation of all programs for which we provide funding. Fundraising and marketing activities are managed locally here in Australia.

4. What revenue are we talking about?

Revenue is the total income that was received by World Vision Australia during the Fiscal Year. Total revenue raised during 2007 was $356.5 million, an increase of 13.9% on 2006.

5. Do I need to be a Christian to work for World Vision Australia?

No. World Vision Australia is a Christian organisation and therefore World Vision Australia staff are expected to work toward Christian Values. This means that though you do not have to be Christian to work for World Vision Australia, although you do need to demonstrate Christian values in the way you behave whilst at work.

You also need to be aware that many World Vision Australia staff chose to partake in Christian practices during the work day. An example of this is weekly “Corporate Devotions”. Whilst practices such as this are in no way compulsory, you are expected to respect this aspect of World Vision Australia.

7. Where do people who have come out of corporate, then into Not for Profit go after their stint with Not for Profit?

The demographic of people joining us is changing significantly. 10 years ago a lot of applicants came to us who had "finished" their stint in corporate. We are now noticing a trend and people are joining us at the height of their career when they still have a lot to give. When they leave World Vision Australia, they either go to work in the World Vision partnership, they take the skills they have learnt and experienced back to the corporate world or they take their experience into another Not for profit.

8. Are all employees valued in World Vision Australia, particularly those working in administration?

"We value people" is one of World Vision Australia’s core values.There tends to be a high level of respect amongst employees at World Vision Australia due to the nature of the work we do and because World Vision Australia employees respect our values.

Administration staff are appreciated for their contribution to the work of World Vision and are often recognized as the backbone to many World Vision teams for their huge amount of knowledge and support in quite a complex organisation.

12. Is there a graduate program? What does it involve? When does the recruitment process happen?

Yes.
World Vision Australia’s Graduate Program provides you with the opportunity to enter the workforce and develop a rewarding career through on-the-job technical training and specialist development activities. These activities include:

  • Graduate Induction Program - Provides the platform for building knowledge and helps first year graduates establish networks with their colleagues throughout the company.
  • Development Plan - A framework for graduate learning and development is established for each individual, giving short and long-term goals and performance and development needs are regularly reviewed.
  • Job Rotations - Gives graduates the flexibility to rotate through various teams or locations to broaden their development, in keeping with graduate and business needs.
  • World Vision Australia Mentor - Each first-year graduate is assigned a support and technical mentor to help with technical work, career guidance and settling into the organisation.

The graduate recruitment process commences in June. Offers are made in September with graduate positions starting in January.
