Breaking news: Green & Black's to go Fairtrade

Published: 29 January 2010

World Vision congratulates Green & Black’s on its announcement to convert 90% of its worldwide food and beverage range to Fairtrade by the end of 2010. The entire range will be Fairtrade by 2011.

Green & Black’s is owned by Cadbury, who in late 2009, made its own commitment to make its Cadbury Dairy Milk product Fairtrade and available in Australia by Easter this year.

These announcements are great news for cocoa farmers in developing communities. Through these Fairtrade deals, they will receive economic, social and environmental benefits. This in turn will empower farmers, their families and communities.

Since early 2008, World Vision's Don't Trade Lives campaign has lobbied Australian chocolate manufactures to take genuine steps to protect children working on cocoa farms. We are delighted with this announcement.

On 2 February 2010, shareholders of the multinational company Kraft Foods are expected to confirm the purchase of Cadbury Global. World Vision calls on Kraft to honour the commitment made by Cadbury. We are hopeful that we are now seeing the burgeoning of Fairtrade conversion, and that in coming months and years, there will be much more to come.
