  3. Chey works with her parents in a brick factory in Phnom Penh.
  4. Sokchan dropped out of school to work in a brick factory.
  5. In India, some children work long hours sewing beads onto saris.
  6. In Niger, World Vision helps boys working in the gold mines.

All over the world people are trapped in human trafficking and slavery - a violation of their human rights. Unaccompanied children, migrants and the economically disadvantaged are most at risk. World Vision is working to end human trafficking and slavery.

Who is it happening to?

Different factors help to explain why women and girls are more vulnerable to human trafficking and slavery. Power imbalances between women and men may mean that women are vulnerable to exploitation. Sometimes, women are trafficked under the guise of being provided with a new job in another country. Young women and children may be trafficked or forced into slavery to meet the debts of their family. Men and boys are also vulnerable to labour trafficking – though for different reasons. Often cultural expectations place sole responsibility for earning income upon men, so they bear the burden to ensure their families are provided for. The pressure and lure of increasing income in surrounding countries might force men and boys into situations where they are exploited by powerful employers.

The trade in human lives is a question of 'supply' and 'demand'. Traffickers seek out vulnerable members of communities where laws are lax and rarely enforced.

Where is it happening?

Human trafficking and slavery is a global phenomenon that straddles many geographic locations and crosses several country borders. One of the key areas World Vision currently works in is the Mekong Delta region in Southeast Asia. We're beginning to see some real progress.
