Background

During February 2007, weeks of heavy rains in Southern Africa caused massive flooding in Mozambique, washing away homes, bridges, livestock and crops. Up to 50 people were killed and as many as 250,000 people affected.

World Vision's response

World Vision staff in Mozambique took immediate action to organise emergency relief interventions, including the distribution of food aid, water purification tablets, mosquito nets and tents.

Funds raised

Thanks to the generous support of Australians, World Vision Australia raised almost $800,000 for the emergency response. The funds have enabled World Vision teams to provide emergency assistance in the wake of the floods and will assist with long-term rehabilitation and reconstruction projects.

Ongoing activities

Most of the affected communities are now residing in temporary shelters and World Vision has shifted activities from emergency response to resettlement.

Thanks to the generous support of Australians, World Vision is helping communities strengthen their livelihood capacities by continuing to build on the relief assistance carried out in the emergency phase, including:

• water and sanitation
• health and nutrition
• seeds and tools distribution
• child protection
• education.

World Vision is also carrying out Food for Work programs in 22 resettlement areas, as part of an agreement with the World Food Programme. Communities will receive food rations for their participation in this program. Activities include:

• brick making for use in house construction
• latrine construction
• rehabilitation of roads
• well construction.
