Emergency Response: Judging the need

Published: 14 September 2009

  1. Civil conflict and war are often devastating for civilian populations.
  2. Supplies and staff are mobilised within hours of a major disaster.
  3. Displaced people stream out of conflict zones in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

When a disaster or other form of emergency hits a country, World Vision’s first response is to judge its severity. This helps us formulate our response.

We’ve developed a detailed and comprehensive methodology to do just that.

Our response will be based on the scale and nature of the emergency and the number of people affected. It will focus on assisting the most vulnerable, including children, women and the elderly, to ensure people's basic needs are met and that human rights are protected.

For a large-scale response, World Vision will collaborate with the United Nations and other international and local aid agencies. This helps to avoid duplication, maximise efficiencies, ensure that all areas of need are met, and that there are no gaps in the overall humanitarian response.
