Church Advocacy:
Take action and speak out

Don't Trade Lives
Micah Challenge

Around the world there are communities who are affected by forces beyond their control; forces such as natural disasters. But some communities are afflicted by ongoing deprivation and systematic injustice - and these are afflictions we can do something about.

Many followers of Jesus are working with the poor and oppressed to bring about lasting changes in challenging circumstances.

World Vision works with Australian churches to be a voice of hope in these struggles.

We work together to speak the truth in places of power and to equip others to be agents of change in their own circles of influence.

Below are some ideas for how your church can participate, but please contact us if you would like other ideas or resources or if you have a story to tell about how your church has taken action.

Don’t Trade Lives

World Vision's Don’t Trade Lives campaign provides opportunities for churches to respond to issues of human trafficking and exploitation. However, your church may specifically like to focus on:

Abolitionist Sunday
21 November 2010

Each November, before Advent, we encourage churches to recognise Abolitionist Sunday. This provides a specific opportunity for churches to:
  • Connect with the issue of human trafficking and exploitation
  • Connect with others in their community and neighbourhood on global issues
  • Provide congregational opportunities for prayer and practical action; and
  • Stand with Abolitionist leaders of the past, such as William Wilberforce, and make a public declaration that your church opposes human trafficking, slavery and exploitation.

Using the tools and resources provided by World Vision’s Don’t Trade Lives campaign, churches can use their creativity and energy to uniquely demonstrate their commitment to seeking justice, helping the oppressed, and defending the cause of those in need (Isaiah 1:17).

Download the Abolitionist Sunday Church Information Sheet which includes more recommendations on how your church can get involved.

Running a Church Information Workshop

The issue of human trafficking and exploitation is complex and often leaves people feeling helpless or perplexed.

World Vision’s workshop on trafficking and exploitation helps individuals and churches improve their understanding of the issue and discuss practical actions that can be taken.

To find out more about running or hosting a workshop in your church, contact us.

Reading Not For Sale with your small group

Cover image of David Batstone's book, Not For Sale. The book Not For Sale, by David Batstone, is an invaluable tool for learning about modern slavery.

World Vision has produced a resource for church and Christian groups to read Not For Sale together and stimulate understanding and opportunities for involvement.

Groups will journey together and learn more about the global slave trade – what it looks like and how it works – so they can be better equipped to be modern day abolitionists and be a voice for those in need.

Micah Challenge

World Vision is a supporter of Micah Challenge – a global campaign of Christians speaking out against poverty and injustice. Through churches, groups and individuals, it encourages global leaders to fulfil their promise to achieve the Millennium Development Goals.

World Vision supports churches to engage with Micah Challenge through resources, campaign activities such the Offering of Letters, and events like Voices for Justice.

Are you a member of a Church or Christian group who want to raise awareness about poverty and help bring about real change, but not sure how? We encourage you to order the Micah Challenge Action Toolkit, which includes the brand new "World we want to see" DVD and other resources to inspire and help you take action! Click on the button below to order the Micah Challenge Action Toolkit.
